There are so many benefits in getting orthodontic treatment. Whether through traditional braces or Invisalign (clear aligners), orthodontic treatment provides so many improvements in multiple areas of life. Let’s take a look.

Perhaps the most obvious benefit is that orthodontic treatment helps ensure proper function of teeth and create healthy smiles. A good bite (the way your teeth are aligned when your mouth is closed) makes it easier for you to chomp, chew and speak. When teeth are misaligned, it’s much harder to clean them, leaving you with more trips to the dentist due to cavities and possibly gingivitis. Plus, misaligned teeth can cause abnormal wearing of tooth enamel, which again, can lead to extensive and expensive dental procedures down the line.

Aside from improving dental health, orthodontic treatment can do wonders for patients’ mental health. An aligned smile can improve confidence and self-esteem, which some studies report that up to 85% of Americans struggle with daily. Straight, healthy looking teeth also have an unconscious effect on those who know or are meeting you, too. In fact, one study showed that people with straight teeth are perceived as “more successful, smarter and having more dates.” According to the study: “When looking at images, Americans perceive those with straight teeth to be 45% more likely than those with crooked teeth to get a job when competing with someone who has a similar skill set and experience. They are also seen as 58% more likely to be successful, as well as 58% more likely to be wealthy.” Even more: “those with straight teeth are seen as 57% more likely than those with crooked teeth to get a date based on their picture alone.” Those are some pretty astonishing statistics.

Now, one thing to keep in mind: orthodontic treatment is not a quick fix. According to the American Association for Orthodontics, “It is a complex biological process. It involves changes in jaw bones, facial bones and soft tissue as teeth are moved into their new positions.” Knowing this, one can expect orthodontic treatment on average to last about a year to a year and a half. It’s pretty worth it, though, especially when you consider that such a small fraction of your or your child’s time will have life-long positive benefits.

On this note: we’d like to caution you to be aware of “quick fix” orthodontic treatment, such as Smile Direct Club, Byte, and other “take-home” orthodontic kits. Many of these companies tout straighter teeth in just a few months, and while that may be the case for some people, the treatment time often is much longer and does not address serious issues. (See our article here to learn more about these issues.)

How does it begin? Your care often starts with a thorough examination of the teeth and mouth, and study of dental records such as x-rays, photos and models of the teeth.
