As orthodontists we understand and know that dreaded feeling when food gets stuck in your metal wires after eating out in public. We’ve all been there (and we’ve experienced the embarrassment of someone pointing that spinach out to us too.) There are so many nooks and crannies in the equipment used for your braces, it can be extremely difficult to keep every space clean after a snack or meal. Luckily we have plenty of tips and tricks to help you stay fresh all day long in order to keep up with braces on the go!

  • Water: The easiest and most readily available way to keep your teeth clean with braces, just swish water around in your mouth and you can get rid of any trace of food or beverage that may be leftover. It can even help decrease acidity in your mouth and prevent decay!
  • Toothbrush: This one may seem obvious, but carrying a travel toothbrush even without toothpaste can be hugely beneficial to your oral hygiene. We recommend getting an interproximal brush, which is tiny enough to keep in any bag and fits perfectly in between your teeth and wires.
  • Floss: Keeping a floss threader on your person while undergoing orthodontic treatment can be a true lifesaver. Or if you can find a travel size pack of “pre-threaded” floss, you’re in business. Being able to thread the floss in between your archwires and your teeth is the most effective way to get rid of any unwanted leftovers.
  • Orthodontic Wax: Brackets aren’t always the most comfortable pieces of equipment to have in your mouth all day. If a bracket or wire begins to rub a sore spot on your gums or lips, placing wax over that piece of metal can immediately put a stop to the irritation.
  • Ibuprofen: It’s always great to have a pain reliever on hand, especially the days immediately following your regular tightening. It can be uncomfortable shifting your teeth into position, and this will take away that discomfort very easily!
