Congratulations on getting your braces off! You have achieved your dream smile through near-perfect alignment. Although you have a straight smile now, it is important to care for your teeth after the braces come off. If you neglect to keep up with post-braces maintenance, your teeth could start to shift back to their original positions. At Gaston Orthodontics, we want your new smile to last a lifetime. Not only so that you are happy with your smile visually, but so that your oral health remains in good shape for many years to come. We have put together some habits you can form to help prevent the need to visit us for a second round of orthodontic treatment

To maintain your beautiful smile after braces, your dentist will create custom-fitted, removable retainers for you to wear every night in your sleep. You have gotten used to paying extra care to your teeth throughout your braces journey, so it should not be a difficult transition to keep up with post-braces maintenance. We recommend following a home care routine for your retainer that includes cleaning it daily with water and toothpaste, and storing the retainer in a dry, secure case to avoid cracking. It is important to keep the retainer clean for its next use. If you do not wear a retainer, your teeth will start to drift out of alignment. If they shift too much another round of braces treatment may be required down the line.

We will also provide you with a permanent or fixed retainer that is placed behind your teeth so that it is not visible to others and will work to help keep your teeth in place 24/7. This thin wire is laid out to follow the alignment of your teeth and bonded with small amounts of orthodontic glue to keep it tightly in place.

It is also important to keep your new smile healthy! Although proper alignment will help protect you against extreme plaque build-up and gum disease, remembering to brush and floss twice a day is still pertinent. We also recommend using a fluoride mouthwash to help prevent cavities and white spots. If you have any questions regarding retainer use, or any other aspect of post-braces maintenance, please give us a call at 704-671-4051.
