As our bodies change while we grow and age, so do our teeth. Obviously we are born with no teeth at all, then grow two rounds of teeth as we mature, and those permanent teeth rarely grow in properly aligned. That’s why you need an orthodontist to transform improperly aligned teeth and jaws so that you have a healthy beautiful smile for life. Orthodontic treatment can be a long and sometimes costly process, so you want to continue to take care of your new beautiful smile long after your braces or Invisalign treatment has been completed.
Your orthodontist will take an impression of your teeth the day your orthodontic device or devices are removed to create a retainer for you to wear the rest of your life. If you do not wear your new retainer daily for the first few weeks, called the “settling in” period, we guarantee your teeth will begin to shift back out of alignment. Force is naturally placed on your teeth through chewing, biting and swallowing any ordinary food or drink, and this force will attempt to move your teeth. It is so important to wear your retainer regularly throughout this time period so that the force does not end up causing large changes instead. We know you do not want to see this result and our team members at Gaston Orthodontics do not want to see it either!
Your teeth will want to continue to change throughout your lifetime and that is why orthodontists prescribe that you continue to wear your retainers while you sleep for the rest of your life. While we cannot always prevent the smaller changes over time, retainers help prevent your teeth and jaws from going back to their original, misaligned positions. If you lose a removable retainer or damage a permanent retainer for some reason, contact your orthodontist right away. Don’t give teeth an opportunity to shift. Commit to wearing your retainers for life!
